Field Day is probably the biggest ham radio event of the year. To me, the magic of Field Day is that it is a collection of ham radio operators of varying experience and knowledge levels, as well as those seeking to learn more about the hobby as they look to obtain their own license.
Some choose to operate solo or in a small group. Others use this as an opportunity to gather together with old and new friends alike for a weekend of fellowship in addition to getting on the air. Many clubs make this their premier event of the year with cookouts, camping, and more.
The primary objective of Field Day is to get out of the shack and into the field. This provides the chance to practice and test emergency setups. An operator may not be involved directly with emergency operations such as the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) or similar organizations. However, it is good to practice and be ready to operate even when it’s as simple as an extended power outage to being able to communicate in the event of a natural or man-made disaster.
This year I will be spending the weekend with the Athens Radio Club located in Athens, GA. We will be at a park in the nearby town of Colbert, GA. I look to post pictures of the event here on this site. Who knows, I may even venture into the world of video too.
Please let a comment and share how and where you spend your Field Day activities.
